In celebration of World Oceans Day on June 8th , we took tangible actions to promote marine conservation and cultural heritage, working together with schools and communities to integrate ocean education into daily life.
This month, we co-organized two meaningful initiatives with local schools and coastal communities in Miaoli. These efforts aim to enhance ocean literacy, raise environmental awareness, and rebuild the connection between people and the ocean, enabling children and the public to learn and reflect through hands-on experiences.
The first event began at Guanyi Ferry Park in Zhunan, where we launched a mangrove wetland and coastal cleanup initiative in collaboration with Wennei Community. Together with 47 students and 4 teachers from Shinnan Elementary School in Miaoli County, we explored the mangrove ecosystem. Through guided ecological tours and hands-on cleanup activities, students learned about local coastal species and the environmental impact of marine debris.
As part of the event, we also hosted a marine waste upcycling DIY workshop. Students and teachers worked together to transform ocean litter into creative crafts, fostering environmental awareness and promoting the concept of resource reuse.
Next in Shueiwei Community, Miaoli, we partnered with students and teachers from Longkeng Elementary School for the “ Shueiwei Beach Cleanup & Traditional Fishing Experience Activity’’
The day began with a beach cleanup and a traditional beach seine fishing experience ,which is one of the most traditional and sustainable fishing methods—offering participants a chance to reconnect with the ocean through an ecologically friendly practice that is rarely seen today. This was followed by sustainable seafood education, a locally sourced seafood lunch, and a DIY seafood pizza-making activity By starting with food, participants explored the ecological significance and resource use behind what we eat. Choosing seasonal, locally caught seafood not only supports sustainable fisheries but also helps reduce carbon emissions—protecting the ocean we all depend on.
We were also delighted to have JERA Energy Taiwan Co., Ltd. join us for this meaningful event and engage directly with the community in celebrating ocean sustainability.
These immersive events not only deepen public appreciation for marine resources and local culture but also embody our commitment to action-based education, cultural preservation, and sustainable living.
Through hands-on learning, students build ocean literacy and gain a clearer understanding of how sustainable food choices relate to marine pollution. At the same time, the experience helps revitalize traditional, eco-friendly fishing practices, fostering a sense of connection between people, nature, andthe earth.
On this important occasion of World Ocean Day, we are not just celebrating in words, but through real action to protect the future of our oceans. Let’s continue working hand in hand with communities, building a green future where we thrive together.
