At the beginning of 2025, Formosa 2 joined hands with the students at Cheng Gong Elementary School and the residents of Shuiwei Community in Houlong for a meaningful event at the Shuiwei Community Activity Center. Together, we explored traditional fishery practive and promoted the concept of sustainable seafood. This event, sponsored by Formosa 2’s Development Assistance Fund (DAF), aimed to deepen community connections while advocating for environmental protection and sustainable practices.
Event Highlights
The activity featured two main themes, providing participants with an enriching experience:
- Traditional Fishery Practice
The Formosa 2 team learned the traditional fishery practice with students and community residents. Through hands-on activities such as land-based bamboo rafts and traditional beach seining, participants experienced the beauty and heritage of traditional fishing practices.
- Promoting Sustainable Seafood
The Sustainable Seafood Guide was introduced during the event, categorizing fish species into three levels based on consumption recommendations: green (recommended), yellow (consume with care), and red (avoid). This initiative encourages the public to choose seafood with a lower carbon footprint, opt for local options, and support environmentally friendly fishing methods.
Additionally, in collaboration with the community, we selected locally abundant threadfin fish to teach residents and students how to make traditional salted dried fish. Through this hands-on workshop, participants not only preserved the natural flavors of the fish but also gained a deeper understanding of ecological sustainability.
This event was made possible with the strong support of the Shuiwei Community Development Association and the enthusiastic participation of Cheng Gong Elementary School students, teachers, and Shuiwei residents. We deeply appreciate the opportunity to engage with the local community and work together towards building a sustainable future.
