TAIPEI: 1 September 2022
Formosa 2 offshore wind project is pleased to reach multiple construction milestones to date, including the completion of all 47 wind turbine foundations and subsea cable installation works. The final jacket foundation was installed on 26 August, with the subsea cable works reaching installation completion 6 days later on 1 September.
Since the last construction updates announced in July, Formosa 2 has continued to make steady progress with all the available weather windows utilised. Currently Formosa 2 has completed the 27th wind turbine installation, which marks more than half of the total turbines installed. Among them, 8 wind turbines started generating power to the national grid.
The turbine foundations of Formosa 2 were designed and constructed specifically to suit prevailing Formosa 2 site geological and met-ocean conditions off the coast of Taiwan, also taking into account the seismic conditions. The jacket foundation structures are amongst the tallest constructed to-date world-wide at up to 91m in height and weighing up to 1,581 tons. The 47 structures were installed on the offshore site between April and 26 August 2022.
The pin piles, which the jacket foundations are installed upon, are approximately 2.4m diameter, up to 277 tons in weight and some 78.9m in length. The installation of the 188 pin piles was concluded earlier in August 2022.
The wind turbine foundations are connected by 47 sections of Inter Array Cables with a further four export cables transmitting the power to the onshore electricity grid. The combined total length of installed subsea cables is 114km with all subsea cables rated at 69kV.
Michael Klingele, Project Director of Formosa 2, said: “We are truly grateful for the efforts of the project team and the support from our partners which were critical in reaching this significant milestone. It demonstrates Formosa 2’s dedication and commitment to promoting and realising Taiwan’s green energy transition. We are extremely proud to maintain high standards of Health, Safety and Environmental performance in achieving this milestone and remain focused on maintaining this, not only to the completion of the construction, but through the operational phase.”
Formosa 2 has been dedicated to bringing benefits to the local supply chain and supporting jobs in the offshore wind industry from the very beginning. In addition to its collaboration with the National United University in Miaoli, Formosa 2 has also held an art competition to expand green energy education to local middle and elementary schools, laying a solid foundation for future green talent.
When complete, the project will have an installed capacity of 376 MW and will supply power to approximately 380,000 households. It is being developed by JERA, Macquarie’s Green Investment Group (GIG) and Synera Renewable Energy (SRE)(formerly known as Swancor Renewable Energy). GIG is supported by its portfolio company, Corio Generation.
